Dr. Jitendra Singh Reviews IMD’s Multi-Hazard Warning System

Union Minister of State, Dr. Jitendra Singh, reviewed the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) new indigenous Multi-Hazard Early Warning Decision Support System (DSS) today, highlighting a cost saving of ₹250 crore. This review took place at IMD headquarters, where the minister acknowledged the importance of homegrown technology in bolstering disaster preparedness in India.

Dr. Singh commended IMD for developing a self-reliant approach to meteorological services. The system enhances public safety and drives a citizen-centered forecasting model, eliminating reliance on international vendors. By adopting this DSS, IMD saved an additional ₹5.5 crore in annual maintenance costs, aligning with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The minister also assessed the Mausamgram initiative, which translates to “Har Har Mausam, Har Ghar Mausam.” This citizen-focused weather platform provides hyperlocal forecasts, enabling users to access real-time weather updates by PIN code or geographic area. The service delivers hourly forecasts for 36 hours, three-hourly forecasts for up to 5 days, and six-hourly forecasts extending to 10 days.

Mausamgram, available in all official Indian languages, ensures universal accessibility, bridging the information gap in rural and remote areas. This move represents a significant leap in how citizens access weather information, making it easier for them to prepare for natural disasters.

IMD has made remarkable strides in its forecasting and alert generation processes, extending the forecast lead time from 5 to 7 days and improving overall accuracy by 15–20%. By also reducing forecast preparation time by three hours, IMD enhances its reliability as a weather service provider.

During discussions with IMD officials, Dr. Singh stressed the need to integrate AI-based tools within the Mausamgram platform. These tools will enhance user interactivity and accessibility, empowering citizens with visual and actionable weather data.

The Minister celebrated IMD’s recent recognition through the National Award for e-Governance 2025, awarded at the 28th National Conference on e-Governance in Visakhapatnam. This accolade highlights IMD’s excellence in delivering digital public services through the DSS system.

In a broader context, Dr. Singh praised the Department’s efforts under the Special Swachhata Program, which has successfully generated ₹30 lakh from the disposal of e-waste and old files, decluttering 600 square meters of space. During his visit, he participated in the “Special Swachhata Program 5.0” where he planted a sapling under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, underscoring his commitment to environmental sustainability.

Looking ahead, Dr. Singh articulated a vision for Mission Mausam. By 2030, IMD aims to install advanced meteorological instruments that will provide 5×5 km-scale hazard forecasting, enabling dynamic impact-based forecasting and risk-based early warnings. This initiative strives for last-mile connectivity, ensuring that critical warnings reach every household, echoing the vision of “Har Har Mausam, Har Ghar Mausam.”
