No Food Grain Shortage in Keran and Jamgund: Minister Sharma

In a significant announcement today, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Satish Sharma, confirmed that the Keran and Jamgund areas of Kupwara district face no food grain shortage. His statement came during a session of the Legislative Assembly in response to concerns raised by MLA Mir Saifullah.

Mir Saifullah had initiated a Calling Attention Motion highlighting the persistent issue of food grain non-availability in these remote regions, which often become inaccessible during winter due to heavy snowfall.

Saifullah pointed out that the harsh winter conditions lead to local shortages of essential commodities for almost six months each year, raising eyebrows among the area residents and local leaders alike.

In a detailed response, Minister Sharma revealed the proactive measures the government has introduced to combat potential shortages. “We ensure advance dumping and supply of food grains under all schemes for eight months, from November to June, to these remote areas, well before winter sets in,” Sharma stated.

He provided assurance that the process of supplying food grains takes place annually before the winter season begins, minimizing the risk of scarcity during the months of road closures.

Minister Sharma presented crucial data supporting his claims. Regarding Jamgund, he noted that, against the required 536.14 quintals of food grains from November 2025 to June 2026, a commendable 100% of the quantity has already been delivered to the area.

Similarly, for Keran, out of the needed 2774.43 quintals, 800 quintals have already reached their destination, with an additional 346.80 quintals stockpiled in advance at designated points for future distribution.

“We are committed to delivering the remaining quantities by October 31, 2025,” said Sharma, emphasizing the government’s resolve to guarantee uninterrupted food supply to all remote and border regions of Jammu and Kashmir.

The government’s strategic planning aims to alleviate fears surrounding food shortages during the challenging winter months, providing reassurance to the residents of Keran and Jamgund.

Sharma’s announcement highlights the importance of effective logistics and supply chain management in ensuring that these communities remain provided for, despite difficult climate conditions.

Local representatives and residents have reacted positively to this initiative. They express gratitude for the government’s foresight and commitment towards securing their food supply.
