Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu of the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been awarded the prestigious Vir Chakra for his exceptional courage and leadership during Operation Sindoor, which took place in May 2023. His bravery stands as a shining example of dedication in the face of daunting challenges.
The Government Gazette released on October 4 highlights that Group Captain Sidhu conducted multiple deep-penetration strike missions. He targeted critical installations under complex threat scenarios, showcasing surgical precision amid layered air defences.
During the intense four-day military conflict between India and Pakistan, Sidhu’s squadron flew advanced fighter aircraft missions into hostile airspace. They successfully accomplished all assigned objectives, contributing significantly to India’s operational capabilities.
The official citation praises him for exhibiting resolute leadership during high-stakes combat, especially in circumstances that endangered his own safety. As Commanding Officer, his decisions played a crucial role in maintaining the squadron’s effectiveness under pressure.
Sidhu led operations from three different locations along the Western sector, demonstrating his tactical brilliance by making dynamic, real-time decisions. His proactive approach ensured mission success while safeguarding the lives of his fellow airmen.
The IAF’s offensive posture saw significant enhancement under his command, which further emphasized the strategic advantage India gained during these operations.
In total, nine pilots from the IAF received the Vir Chakra for their valiant efforts during Operation Sindoor, an operation launched following the Pahalgam terror attack. The Vir Chakra is the third-highest wartime gallantry award in India, recognizing acts of extraordinary bravery.
Among the other honorees were Group Captains Manish Arora, Animesh Patni, and Kunal Kalra. Group Captain Arora’s citation highlighted his dynamic leadership, referencing his successful unescorted strike mission that required navigating heavily defended airspace, achieving pinpoint accuracy even amidst enemy threats.
Additionally, Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik gained recognition for his bold manoeuvres that disoriented enemy formations, further showcasing the courage exhibited by IAF personnel.
President Droupadi Murmu approved a total of 127 gallantry awards and 40 distinguished service awards in a ceremony marking India’s 79th Independence Day, underscoring the country’s commitment to honouring bravery in service to the nation.
